Cardiovascular Health #
Benefits #
May help to lower blood pressure, increase blood flow and support general cardiovascular health.
Time frame #
- Immediate to Medium-term effects: Some evidence suggests within a week there can be benefits associated with cardiovascular health.
- Long term effects: There needs to be more evidence to see how long term use of L-Citrulline benefits cardiovascular health.
Suggested Use and Dosage #
3-6 grams per day seems to provide the most benefit for most people, this would require some experimentation what dosage would work best for you.
Energy and Endurance #
Benefits #
This supplement can improve endurance performance, including increased time to exhaustion, decreased fatigue, and improved aerobic energy production.
Time frame #
- Immediate effects: After 1-2 hours you can already experience improved energy and endurance.
- Medium-term effects: It may further enhance energy and endurance.
- Long-term effects: Limited evidence is available on the long-term effects of L-citrulline supplementation on endurance.
Suggested Use and Dosage #
Evidence suggests 6-8 grams of L-citrulline per day, taken 1-2 hours before exercise.
Safety and Precautions #
L-citrulline is generally well-tolerated when taken at recommended dosages for endurance. Mild side effects, such as gastrointestinal discomfort, may occur in some individuals
Personal Experience #
I’ve been using 3.6 grams of L-Citrulline supplementation with a diet of regular beef, egg, and dairy consumption, which provides well over 6 grams of L-arginine per day. With this diet and supplementation, I’m experiencing some cardiovascular improvements during weight training sessions of about 1 hour each, 4 times a week. I would not say the differences are very noticable before using L-citrulline versus after.
In time, I might consider using this for just the cardiovascular benefits it provides. Since I have a naturally high blood pressure and this may alleviate that somewhat.
Muscle Growth #
Benefits #
This supplement could improve resistance exercise performance such as; increased reps and decreased muscle soreness. However, all the studies done include Malate, as L-Citrulline Malate.
There’s no research available for L-Citrulline alone when it comes to strength benefits specifically.
Time frame #
- Immediate effects: within 1-2 hours after ingestion.
- Medium to Long-term effects: Limited evidence is available on the medium-term effects of L-citrulline supplementation on strength and recovery.
Suggested Use and Dosage #
The dosages for L-citrulline have not been formally tested for Muscle Growth benefits.
However, there have been studies conducted for Citrulline Malate (CM), but the ratios used for these studies is unknown. Usually CM is mixed either 1:1 or 2:1, the dosage for L-citrulline alone could be in the range of;
4 to 6 grams per day, 1 hour before exercise
.
Some experimentation is required to get the best effect for your particular situation.
Safety and Precautions #
L-citrulline is generally well-tolerated when taken at recommended dosages for endurance. Mild side effects, such as gastrointestinal discomfort, may occur in some individuals
